The flu is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract. It is easily spread by sneezing and coughing. Individual strains continually change, so vaccines are not very successful. There are three main types of influenza: A, B, and C. Type A is the most common: all are airborne and most frequently spread by droplets(coughing, sneezing, kissing, and sharing drinking glasses and towels). It is important to note that Flu epidemics occur ever 1-3 years and major epidemics every 10 years due to the virus' change in strain.
Because it is a viral infection, influenza may appear suddenly after an incubation period of only 1 to 3 days after exposure. The sooner treatment begins, the sooner the recovery. If treated properly, symptoms may rapidly diminish, however, coughing, weakness, and fatigue may persist for several days or weeks.
The flu is an advanced cold condition and the body catches the flu when it is full of waste matter and toxins through lowered vitality and by body exposure to cold and dampness. The goal is to eliminate these conditions to effectively assist the body in its recovery.
Natural Remedies
The fastest way to eliminate this condition is by proper diet and rest, and by flushing the body system with diaphoretic herbs.
Take a ginger bath - Add one pound of ginger to a tub of water or a mustard-cayenne bath with a cold sheet afterward under covers in bed.
The antispasmodic herbs relax the cell structure, loosening and discharging the mucous matter.
Drink fruit juices (especially hot lemon juice) should be taken alternately with the herbal teas.
After the cleansing crisis, the body system should be built up with tonic herbs and with nutritious, non-mucus forming foods.
Take in fluids- fruit juices, vegetable soups to replace fluids and electrolytes lost through sweating, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Drink at least 10 glasses of water a day, to keep lung secretions thin.
